{॥ ಉಕ್ತಿ ಪ್ರತ್ಯುಕ್ತಿಸ್ತೋತ್ರಮ್ ॥}
ಶ್ರೀವಾದಿರಾಜಯತಿ ಕೃತಮ್ ।

Note. This short poem consists of just three verses. The first two verses are
in the form of a conversation between a gopi woman and child Krishna.
In the first verse Krishna is teased by a gopi. Krishna is a child and
so is guileless. The words in His reply carry an alternate meaning.
The gopi cunningly uses this second meaning to tease Krishna and thus
the conversation goes on.
(ಉಕ್ತಿ = statement, ಪ್ರತ್ಯುಕ್ತಿ = statement in reply.)
ಅಙ್ಗುಲ್ಯಾ ಕಃ ಕವಾಟಂ ಪ್ರಹರತಿ? ಕುಟಿಲೇ! ಮಾಧವಃ, ಕಿಂ ವಸನ್ತೋ?
ನೋ ಚಕ್ರೀ, ಕಿಂ ಕುಲಾಲೋ? ನಹಿ ಧರಣೀಧರಃ, ಕಿಂ ದ್ವಿಜಿಹ್ವಃ ಫಣೀನ್ದ್ರಃ?
ನಾಹಂ ಘೋರಾಹಿಮರ್ದೀ, ಖಗಪತಿರಸಿ ಕಿಂ? ನೋ ಹರಿಃ, ಕಿಂ
ಕಪೀನ್ದ್ರಸ್ತ್ವಿತ್ಯೇವಂ ಗೋಪಕನ್ಯಾ-ಪ್ರತಿವಚನಜಡಃ ಪಾತು ಮಾಂ ಪದ್ಮನಾಭಃ ॥ ೧॥
(Gopi):- ಅಙ್ಗುಲ್ಯಾ =With the finger ಕಃ ಕವಾಟಂ ಪ್ರಹರತಿ? =
who is hitting (tapping) the door?
(Krishna):- ಕುಟಿಲೇ = O! crooked one! ಮಾಧವಃ (I am)
Madhava. (also means spring season).
(Gopi):- ಕಿಂ ವಸನ್ತಃ? =Is it the spring season?
(Krishna):- ನೋ, ಚಕ್ರೀ = No, (I am) Chakrapani or the one with
the wheel (also means a potter).
(Gopi):- ಕಿಂ ಕುಲಾಲಃ? = Is it a potter?
(Krishna):- ನಹಿ, ಧರಣೀಧರಃ = No, I am the one bearing the world.
(Gopi):- ಕಿಂ ದ್ವಿಜಿಹ್ವಾ ಫಣೀನ್ದ್ರಃ? = is it the serpant Sesha
(who is said to bear the world on his head),
the king of the snakes?
(Krishna):- ನಾಹಂ, ಘೋರಾಹಿಮರ್ದೀ = not me, (I am) the one who
controlled the frightful snake (Kaliya),
(Gopi):- ಖಗಪತಿರಸಿ ಕಿಂ = are you Garuda, the king of birds?
(and enemy of snakes)
(Krishna):- ನೋ, ಹರಿಃ no, (I am) Hari (also means a monkey),
(Gopi):- ಕಿಂ ಕಪೀನ್ದ್ರಃ ಅಸ್ತಿ? are you the chief of the monkeys?
ಇತಿ ಏವಂ = in this manner ಪದ್ಮನಾಭಃ = Lord Padmanabha
ಗೋಪಕನ್ಯಾ ಪ್ರತಿವಚನಜಡಃ = who was not smart and was unable to
respond to the gopi ಮಾಂ ಪಾತು = may protect me.
ಕೃಷ್ಣ! ತ್ವಂ ಕುತ್ರ ಗತೋಽಸಿ ಚಾದ್ಯ ಮೃಗಯಾಸಕ್ತೋ ವನಾನ್ತಂ ಗತೋ
ಗನ್ಧೋಽನ್ಯೋ ವನಪುಷ್ಪಜಃ ಶ್ರಮಜಲಂ ಘರ್ಮಕ್ಷತಂ ಕಣ್ಟಕೈಃ ।
ಅಸ್ತ್ವೇವಂ ಮೃಗಯಾ ತು ಕೇನಚಿದ್ ಅಹೋ ದಷ್ಟೋಽಧರೋ ದೄಶ್ಯತೇ
ಶಙ್ಖಪೂರಣಮತ್ರ ಕಾರಣಮಿದಂ ಕುರ್ಯಾಂ ಪ್ರಮಾಣನಿ ತೇ ॥ ೨॥
(Gopi):- ಕೃಷ್ಣ! ತ್ವಂ ಕುತ್ರ ಗತೋಽಸಿ ಚಾದ್ಯ = Krishna!
where had you been today?
(Krishna):- ಮೃಗಯಾಸಕ್ತೋ ವನಾನ್ತಂ ಗತಃ = I went to the forest
in search of animals.
(Gopi):- ಗನ್ಧೋ ಅನ್ಯೋ ವನಪುಷ್ಪಜಃ = (but I get) smell that is
different; it is from that of a wild (forest) flower?
(Krishna):- ಶ್ರಮಜಲಂ ಘರ್ಮಕ್ಷತಂ ಕಣ್ಟಕೈಃ = it is from
the sweat caused by the heat and (I am also)
hurt by the thorns.
(Gopi):- ಅಸ್ತು ಏವಂ ಮೃಗಯಾ = let it be so about chasing the animals,
ತು ಕೇನಚಿದ್ ಅಹೋ ದಷ್ಟೋಽಧರೋ ದೃಶ್ಯತೇ? = but, your lips
appear to be bitten by some one?
(Krishna):- ಶಙ್ಖಪೂರಣಮತ್ರ ಕಾರಣಮಿದಂ = the reason is the
blowing of the conch.
ಕುರ್ಯಾಂ ಪ್ರಮಾಣನಿ ತೇ = I will put up evidence to you.
ಅಮ್ಭಸ್ತೇ ಶಯನೀಯ-ಮೇತ-ದುದಧೇ-ರ್ಲೀಲೋಪಧಾನಂ ಫಣೀ
ತ್ವತ್ತೇಜಃಪರಮಾಣುರೇಷ ದಹನೋ ಭೃತ್ಯಾಃ ಸಮಸ್ತಾಃ ಸುರಾಃ ।
ಕುಕ್ಷಿನ್ಯಸ್ತ-ಸಮಸ್ತ-ಭಾರಜಗತಃ ಕಿಂ ಸ್ಯಾತ್ತುಲಾರೋಪಣೇ ವ್ಯರ್ಥಂ ವಾಚ್ಯಮಿದಂ
ಸ್ತ್ರಿಯೋಪಹಸಿತಃ ಸ್ಮೇರೋ ಹರಿಃ ಪಾತು ನಃ ॥ ೩॥
ಉದಧೇ ಅಮ್ಭಸ್ತೇ ಶಯನೀಯಂ = the waters of the ocan is your
resting place, ಏತತ್ ಲೀಲೋಉಪಧಾನಂ ಫಣೀ = the pillow You sport is the snake (Sesha),
ಏಷ ದಹನಃ = this fire
ತ್ವತ್ ತೇಜಃಪರಮಾಣುಃ = is but an atom of Your effulgence,
ಭೃತ್ಯಾಃ ಸಮಸ್ತಾಃ ಸುರಾಃ = all the gods are Your servants,
ಕುಕ್ಷಿನ್ಯಸ್ತ-ಸಮಸ್ತ-ಭಾರಜಗತಃ
the weight of the entire universe is held in Your stomach, (this being so),
ತುಲಾರೋಪಣೇ in making comparison ಕಿಂ ಸ್ಯಾತ್? = what can happen?
ಸ್ತ್ರಿಯೋಪಹಸಿತಃ (to say that ) You were laughed at by a woman,
ವ್ಯರ್ಥಂ ವಾಚ್ಯಮಿದಂ = is but a meaningless statemant only.
ಸ್ಮೇರಃ = that smiling, ಹರಿಃ ಪಾತು ನಃ = Hari, let Him protect us.
Note:- The legend of Krishna is charming and had given rise to many
such poems that describe gopis teasing or talking to Krishna.
This one is from Sri Krishnakarnamritam. Here a gopi had caught Krishna
when He was trying to insert His hand into a vessel containing
butter. She starts questioning Him.
ಕಸ್ತ್ವಂ ಬಾಲ! ಬಲಾನುಜಃ, ಕಿಮಿಹ ತೇ? ಮನ್ಮನ್ದಿರಾಶಙ್ಕಯಾ,
ಯುಕ್ತಂ, ತನ್ನವನೀತ-ಪಾತ್ರವಿವರೇ ಹಸ್ತಂ ಕಿಮರ್ತಂ ನ್ಯಸೇಃ?
ಮಾತಃ! ಕಞ್ಚನ ವತ್ಸಕಂ ಮೃಗಯಿತುಂ ಮಾ ಗಾಃ ವಿಷಾದಂ ಕ್ಷಣಾತ್
ಇತ್ಯೇವಂ ವರವಲ್ಲವೀ ಪ್ರತಿವಚಃ ಕೃಷ್ಣಸ್ಯ ಪುಷ್ಣಾತು ನಃ ॥
Gopi:- ಕಸ್ತ್ವಂ ಬಾಲ! = O boy! who are you?
Krishna:- ಬಲಾನುಜಃ = I am the brother of Balarama.
Gopi:- ಕಿಮಿಹ ತೇ? = what do you want here?
Krishna: ಮನ್ಮನ್ದಿರಾಶಙ್ಕಯಾ = (I entered) mistaking
this to be my house.
Gopi:- ಯುಕ್ತಂ ತತ್ = it is OK.ನವನೀತ-ಪಾತ್ರವಿವರೇ ಹಸ್ತಂ
ಕಿಮರ್ತಂ ನ್ಯಸೇಃ? = (but) why did you keep your hand in the vessel having butter?
Krishna:- ಮಾತಃ! O mother! ಕಞ್ಚನ ವತ್ಸಕಂ ಮೃಗಯಿತುಂ =
(it is) to look for a calf,
ಮಾ ಗಾಃ ವಿಷಾದಂ ಕ್ಷಣಾತ್ = do not get upset (so fast) in a second.
ಇತ್ಯೇವಂ ವರವಲ್ಲವೀ ಪ್ರತಿವಚಃ ಕೃಷ್ಣಸ್ಯ ಪುಷ್ಣಾತು ನಃ = let
such words of Krishna given in reply to the good gopi woman protect us.
