உக்தி ப்ரத்யுக்திஸ்தோத்ரம்
{॥ உக்தி ப்ரத்யுக்திஸ்தோத்ரம் ॥}
ஶ்ரீவாதிராஜயதி கதம் ।

Note. This short poem consists of just three verses. The first two verses are
in the form of a conversation between a gopi woman and child Krishna.
In the first verse Krishna is teased by a gopi. Krishna is a child and
so is guileless. The words in His reply carry an alternate meaning.
The gopi cunningly uses this second meaning to tease Krishna and thus
the conversation goes on.
(உக்தி = statement, ப்ரத்யுக்தி = statement in reply.)
அங்குல்யா கஃ கவாடஂ ப்ரஹரதி? குடிலே! மாதவஃ, கிஂ வஸந்தோ?
நோ சக்ரீ, கிஂ குலாலோ? நஹி தரணீதரஃ, கிஂ த்விஜிஹ்வஃ பணீந்த்ரஃ?
நாஹஂ கோராஹிமர்தீ, ககபதிரஸி கிஂ? நோ ஹரிஃ, கிஂ
கபீந்த்ரஸ்த்வித்யேவஂ கோபகந்யா-ப்ரதிவசநஜடஃ பாது மாஂ பத்மநாபஃ ॥ ௧॥
(Gopi):- அங்குல்யா =With the finger கஃ கவாடஂ ப்ரஹரதி? =
who is hitting (tapping) the door?
(Krishna):- குடிலே = O! crooked one! மாதவஃ (I am)
Madhava. (also means spring season).
(Gopi):- கிஂ வஸந்தஃ? =Is it the spring season?
(Krishna):- நோ, சக்ரீ = No, (I am) Chakrapani or the one with
the wheel (also means a potter).
(Gopi):- கிஂ குலாலஃ? = Is it a potter?
(Krishna):- நஹி, தரணீதரஃ = No, I am the one bearing the world.
(Gopi):- கிஂ த்விஜிஹ்வா பணீந்த்ரஃ? = is it the serpant Sesha
(who is said to bear the world on his head),
the king of the snakes?
(Krishna):- நாஹஂ, கோராஹிமர்தீ = not me, (I am) the one who
controlled the frightful snake (Kaliya),
(Gopi):- ககபதிரஸி கிஂ = are you Garuda, the king of birds?
(and enemy of snakes)
(Krishna):- நோ, ஹரிஃ no, (I am) Hari (also means a monkey),
(Gopi):- கிஂ கபீந்த்ரஃ அஸ்தி? are you the chief of the monkeys?
இதி ஏவஂ = in this manner பத்மநாபஃ = Lord Padmanabha
கோபகந்யா ப்ரதிவசநஜடஃ = who was not smart and was unable to
respond to the gopi மாஂ பாது = may protect me.
கஷ்ண! த்வஂ குத்ர கதோऽஸி சாத்ய மகயாஸக்தோ வநாந்தஂ கதோ
கந்தோऽந்யோ வநபுஷ்பஜஃ ஶ்ரமஜலஂ கர்மக்ஷதஂ கண்டகைஃ ।
அஸ்த்வேவஂ மகயா து கேநசித் அஹோ தஷ்டோऽதரோ தஶ்யதே
ஶங்கபூரணமத்ர காரணமிதஂ குர்யாஂ ப்ரமாணநி தே ॥ ௨॥
(Gopi):- கஷ்ண! த்வஂ குத்ர கதோऽஸி சாத்ய = Krishna!
where had you been today?
(Krishna):- மகயாஸக்தோ வநாந்தஂ கதஃ = I went to the forest
in search of animals.
(Gopi):- கந்தோ அந்யோ வநபுஷ்பஜஃ = (but I get) smell that is
different; it is from that of a wild (forest) flower?
(Krishna):- ஶ்ரமஜலஂ கர்மக்ஷதஂ கண்டகைஃ = it is from
the sweat caused by the heat and (I am also)
hurt by the thorns.
(Gopi):- அஸ்து ஏவஂ மகயா = let it be so about chasing the animals,
து கேநசித் அஹோ தஷ்டோऽதரோ தஶ்யதே? = but, your lips
appear to be bitten by some one?
(Krishna):- ஶங்கபூரணமத்ர காரணமிதஂ = the reason is the
blowing of the conch.
குர்யாஂ ப்ரமாணநி தே = I will put up evidence to you.
அம்பஸ்தே ஶயநீய-மேத-துததே-ர்லீலோபதாநஂ பணீ
த்வத்தேஜஃபரமாணுரேஷ தஹநோ பத்யாஃ ஸமஸ்தாஃ ஸுராஃ ।
குக்ஷிந்யஸ்த-ஸமஸ்த-பாரஜகதஃ கிஂ ஸ்யாத்துலாரோபணே வ்யர்தஂ வாச்யமிதஂ
ஸ்த்ரியோபஹஸிதஃ ஸ்மேரோ ஹரிஃ பாது நஃ ॥ ௩॥
உததே அம்பஸ்தே ஶயநீயஂ = the waters of the ocan is your
resting place, ஏதத் லீலோஉபதாநஂ பணீ = the pillow You sport is the snake (Sesha),
ஏஷ தஹநஃ = this fire
த்வத் தேஜஃபரமாணுஃ = is but an atom of Your effulgence,
பத்யாஃ ஸமஸ்தாஃ ஸுராஃ = all the gods are Your servants,
குக்ஷிந்யஸ்த-ஸமஸ்த-பாரஜகதஃ
the weight of the entire universe is held in Your stomach, (this being so),
துலாரோபணே in making comparison கிஂ ஸ்யாத்? = what can happen?
ஸ்த்ரியோபஹஸிதஃ (to say that ) You were laughed at by a woman,
வ்யர்தஂ வாச்யமிதஂ = is but a meaningless statemant only.
ஸ்மேரஃ = that smiling, ஹரிஃ பாது நஃ = Hari, let Him protect us.
Note:- The legend of Krishna is charming and had given rise to many
such poems that describe gopis teasing or talking to Krishna.
This one is from Sri Krishnakarnamritam. Here a gopi had caught Krishna
when He was trying to insert His hand into a vessel containing
butter. She starts questioning Him.
கஸ்த்வஂ பால! பலாநுஜஃ, கிமிஹ தே? மந்மந்திராஶங்கயா,
யுக்தஂ, தந்நவநீத-பாத்ரவிவரே ஹஸ்தஂ கிமர்தஂ ந்யஸேஃ?
மாதஃ! கஞ்சந வத்ஸகஂ மகயிதுஂ மா காஃ விஷாதஂ க்ஷணாத்
இத்யேவஂ வரவல்லவீ ப்ரதிவசஃ கஷ்ணஸ்ய புஷ்ணாது நஃ ॥
Gopi:- கஸ்த்வஂ பால! = O boy! who are you?
Krishna:- பலாநுஜஃ = I am the brother of Balarama.
Gopi:- கிமிஹ தே? = what do you want here?
Krishna: மந்மந்திராஶங்கயா = (I entered) mistaking
this to be my house.
Gopi:- யுக்தஂ தத் = it is OK.நவநீத-பாத்ரவிவரே ஹஸ்தஂ
கிமர்தஂ ந்யஸேஃ? = (but) why did you keep your hand in the vessel having butter?
Krishna:- மாதஃ! O mother! கஞ்சந வத்ஸகஂ மகயிதுஂ =
(it is) to look for a calf,
மா காஃ விஷாதஂ க்ஷணாத் = do not get upset (so fast) in a second.
இத்யேவஂ வரவல்லவீ ப்ரதிவசஃ கஷ்ணஸ்ய புஷ்ணாது நஃ = let
such words of Krishna given in reply to the good gopi woman protect us.
॥ இதி ஶ்ரீவாதிராஜயதி கதம் உக்தி-ப்ரத்யுக்தி ஸ்தோத்ரம் ஸஂபூர்ணம் ॥
